What They Do:

Cylinders are linear actuators. Explained simply,
they convert hydraulic energy into motion in a
straight line, linear mechanical power. They make up
the majority of the final uses in hydraulic systems
and are simple in concept, yet have a multitude
of industrial uses.

Primary Types and How They Work:

Single-Acting Cylinder:

Pressurized on one end, the opposite end
is simply vented back to the reservoir.

Ram:

Has one fluid chamber and exerts force
in one direction. Usually mounted vertically, they are
ideal for long strokes, such as elevators
and automobile hoists.

Telescopic Cylinder:

Mostly single acting, these actuators
are fitted with multiple nested rod sleeves, that work
together to provide a longer working stroke than is
possible with a standard cylinder.

Spring Return:

Pressure applied to the cap-end port
compresses an internal spring as the rod extends.
Reducing pressure allows the spring to retract the rod.

Double-Acting Cylinder:

The double acting cylinder is the
most common type, where pressure is applied to
either port, giving powered motion in both directions.

Repair Procedures:

  • Cylinder is disassembled.
  • Barrel is inspected.
  • Replace/hone barrel as necessary.
  • Inspect/repair/replace rod as necessary.
  • Clean all parts.
  • Replace all seals and packings.
  • Check tie rod tensile strength to specs.
  • Inspect all threaded connections and mounting surfaces.
  • Assemble cylinder.
  • Test cylinder to 100% rated pressure along entire stroke.
  • Adjust cushions.
  • Cover all external ports prior to painting and shipping.
  • Paint with rust inhibitive paint.
